Endings are important. They can simultaneously tie up the story in an episode while also suggesting future story. Sometimes, though, an ending in an episode serves to do nothing more than close a story arc. Whedon and his crew have a type of ending found in some of the episodes that is typical of shows like Buffy/Angel and Firefly.
I don't know why I was struck so strongly by this last class. The episode of Angel that we watched featured an ending where a poignant emotional reached as the camera pulled out on the slowly ending conversation. I was so strongly reminded of an episode of Firefly that I had to post it here. This is just the last two minutes or so ... no significant spoilers:
I tried to find the Angel episode online to link for comparison, but I was unable to find one that I could embed. I will trust the prodigious memory of the class to draw the comparison.
Why would Whedon use similar styles of ending from the different shows? I don't really know the answer, but I could not resist pointing out the comparison that was screaming in my head for the past few days.
