Liking this a little better...
I thought the pilot episode for Angel was entertaining. I felt it had a darker theme than Buffy did. I found it hard not to compare the two shows together. The plots appear similar and yet presented in a different atmosphere. They incorporated Cordelia, a familiar character from Buffy, into the scene early. I took this as a definite ploy to attract avid Buffy watchers. The pilot did a good job setting up the series; you understand what Angel's history and current mission is. I felt sad when he was unable to save Tina from Russell but was very happy when Angel pushed him through the window to his death. Someone mentioned in class that Angel had a more mature feel to it than Buffy did. Maybe that is why I can relate to this program better than I could with Buffy and could see myself willingly watching more of it.

Angel was a lot darker, right down to the actual lighting in the show. I also felt like everything was slower and more "down" emotionally. It is a drastic difference from Buffy which was perky and happy most of the time. I was thinking though, because we watched the two shows back to back, maybe we are just more critical in saying all the things Angel isn't compared to Buffy. I wonder is people who watched Angel and Buffy during their prime felt the same need to compare.
Though I agree, we did mention in class about Angel being a more "mature" show than Buffy, but it is important to note that we determined that the show feels more mature, not necessarily that it is more mature. Personally, I withhold judgment on the maturity level until I have seen more of the show.
Though, I admit that this series may have me hooked a bit better than Buffy did ... the musical style of a theme song influences my interest in a show, and I am rather fond of cellos ...
SO right about the theme song, I liked it so much more, and I felt as though it had a haunting quality that hooked the reader into Angels brooding-bad boy who will save the world image. I totally bought it!
