Angel goes Opposite

After thinking about this latest episode I realized something rather interesting. This episode showed something what I think could be classified as Opposite Racism. Anglea touched on the race topic briefly but I think this episode played on this concept strongly, but using subtle techniques.

For instance, near the beginning, there was a black family that was at the front desk trying to get a room. They were turned away even though the sign said "vacancy". Throughout the episode, besides the main woman (who's name escapes me) all the other chracters were white. All the people that died in the hotel were white. Angel, the person lynched, was white.

Except, the woman, who was mixed, did not die. As well, as many people mentioned in class, the demon at the end, appeared to be a southern black man. This is appears to me to be playing on the idea of racism, especially in the south, where it is mostly seen as white people killing black people. That probably sounds worse than I mean it to be.

It was just interesting to see how the idea of race in the hotel is turned upside down, without being overly obvious.

True, however at the same time you have to take into consideration the culture into the upbrining of different races. each race/ethnic group has their own set of superstitions, therefore it makes sense that the demon was a black man because after all what did people in the south have to faear? the black man, who is stereotyped in all evil ways

That's an interesting take on the episode. I think it may be a bit of a stretch though, the reason that everyone who died was white is simply b/c they only allowed whites to stay there. I don't think that the character who survived being mixed played much of a role in her survival.
