Mal Rules

Photobucket

When I heard the words “space cowboy” I immediately got that song “Space Cowboy,” by NSYNC stuck in my head. My expectations went downhill from there. However, during my first Firefly experience I realized my prejudgments may have been a little dramatic and wrong. I thought this episode was awesome. First of all, I was totally thrilled to see Nathan Fillion as Captain Mal because of his roles in Lost, Desperate Housewives, and The Waitress. (All Fantastic) There’s something about his character in Firefly that I really like. He has a dry sense of humor and a ‘badassness’ about him that I find really entertaining to watch. The best part of the entire episode is when the guy with the gun was going to shoot Simon and Mal comes in and shoots the gunman without hesitation. That part is totally brilliant. I hate slow motion, dragged out shooting scenes where the protagonist stands with his/her gun pointed at the bad guy/girl for a half hour while some dramatic dialogue is going on. It’s the worst. So this speedy scene rules and made me fall in love with Mal and makes me want to watch more Firefly.

While I do acknowledge the speed that firefly takes with mal getting straight to the point I still cannot find myself to like him. I suppose when I watch more of the series my opinion will change but at the moment his "badassness" is more like "d-baggery" to me

Not to sound pretentious, but I feel like he is too complex to be chalked up to douche-baggery from one episode. He does too many out of character things if we are pegging him into the arrogant hero archetype.

Corinne, I just wanted to give you a blog-high-five for the Waitress mention. Nathan Fillion is so wonderful in that movie. :)

I've been a Nathan Fillion fan since he was on One Life to Live in the 90s. (Yeah, I just put that out there...) And Waitress is a heck of a movie. :)
