Maybe nothing is an original idea anymore. "Are We Now..."

It seems that the themes and ideas presented in any television show can be related to another, previous show. I started thinking about this because "Are We Now or Have You Ever Been" has been compared to many other movies and stories that came before it's tevision episode debute. The idea that themes and storylines are constantly recycled is very true. Rarely do we ever see or read something that is new or different, but instead we are given old ideas and stories with the same or just a little different twist. I think this proves that Harris' idea of forwarding isn't just useful in essay type writting but in all writing. "Are We Now or Have You Ever Been" recycles some ideas from the movie Psycho. The woman in Angel, Judy, has a very similar story to Marion in Psycho. Both women have stolen money, boyfriend problems, are running from the law, and end up hiding in a hotel. This episode of Angel also recycles ideas from Rebel Without a Cause with the continuous talk of the world ending and the way Angel is dressed. "The Yellow Wallpaper" is also portrayed in this epiosode when Angel says, "maybe it was the wallpaper that drove him crazy" as an explination for the first hotel guest's death. These themes and ideas are just a few of the repeated ones used in "Are We Now or Have You Ever Been" which makes me wonder if it is possible in today's world to come up with an original story idea.

A really smart post, Michelle! I meant to mention the Psycho connection, too.

I like that you have us thinking about this question of "newness" and originality, since it will push us past simply saying "It's been done before," but instead looking at ideas of tradition, rewriting, homage, etc. more fully.

I immediately thought of "The Yellow Wallpaper" when Judy made that comment. I'm glad I wasn't the only one to make that association!
