Meh

I'm not totally sure how I feel about Firefly quite yet. On one hand, I like the guns and the violence and all that and I do appreciate a main character that isn't your typical warm, fuzzy guy. On the other hand, it just seems like a bit too much. I think if this show would have been 30 minutes I'd be more into it. An hour is a long time for a show, even the best shows have their moments where it's like "ok, do we really need to see all this".

One thing that I do find cool about Firefly is that it does have an old western feel to it. When we think in the future everyone automatically assumes everything will be nice and shiny and floating in the clouds and lasers. This show takes a more realistic view of this, we see people still using guns and in the one particular scene in which they are ambushed, there are people on horses.

I love Joss's choice to make the future almost regressive, I feel like by doing that he is challenging an assumption most people don't even know they have made!

Yes--good point. Time doesn't necessarily mean progress. Neither does new technology or innovation.
