The Second Go Around
I walked into class yesterday with an open mind, ready to give Buffy the second chance that I knew it deserved. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. All of the elements that I had originally praised in "Surprise" returned, accompanied by some awesome dialogue (Xander rocks), clever plot twists, and an ALMOST complete absence of noisy kissing. Willow has been confirmed as my favorite character, returning to the screen with another stellar performance. She is followed by the loyal, wisecracking, and comical Xander. With regards to the leads, both Buffy and Angel delivered strong performances in "Innocence", redeeming, in my opinion, their previous escapades. Buffy's emotional reaction to Angel's "fall" (if I may) is, for the most part, convincing and well done. As for Angel, he makes a much more convincing villain than ally (at least in my limited experience). His statement, "To kill this girl you have to love her", was, in my opinion, pure genius and was one, at least to me, of many indicators that Angel was meant to be a villain.

I don't think Angel is ment to be a villain, I think he is just in a situation beyond his control in the episode, "Innocence." Though some of the comments that he makes to Buffy are horrible, and he is trying to hurt her, I still just don't by it. To me, there was still a hint of something between them, even when he was hurting her. I kinda see this episode as his claim to insanity, and soon they'll be back together agian. In "Suprise" their love seemed too strong to just be gone, forever. Angel just needs his soul to realize, and losing his soul wasn't really his fault. I sure hope he found it in the next episode.
I'm sorry if my post was somewhat ambiguous in this area. What I meant to say was not necessarily that angel himself prefers being a villain or that he should always be evil, but that, in my opinion, Angel (meaning his actions, speech, etc) render him a much more convincing and effective villain than ally.
I was also pleased by the lack ofloud smooching in "Innocence". I would rather watch them kick each others butt then listen to them kiss! Yuck!
